Eat mindfully

It’s not just what you eat but how you eat that can affect your gut health. With the fast pace of modern life, it’s easy to rush your food – perhaps even eating while on the move, rather than sitting down at the table and taking the time to enjoy it. Eating too fast prevents your gut from digesting your food properly. Not taking time to relax when you’re eating can cause indigestion and other problems. It takes your brain about 20 minutes to send out signals to your stomach that you are full, so if you eat too quickly you may well eat more than you need, which over time will lead to weight gain.

Chewing your food well will give the enzymes in your saliva more time to start breaking down your food, and to stimulate your gastric juices. Taking a slow and mindful approach will improve your digestion and help you avoid eating too much and suffering from wind and bloating.

Happy gut tip

Eat three proper meals a day with gaps in between, rather than constantly grazing. Have at least 12 hours without food overnight. Research shows that giving your gut some downtime boosts the health of the biome and enables gut-strengthening bugs like Akkermansia to thrive and do their job.
